For Referring GPs

Dr. McQuillan welcomes referrals for patients requiring specialist assessment in nephrology and general internal medicine. All patients must be referred by their GP. Self-referrals are not accepted.

When to Refer

Dr. McQuillan provides expert consultation for Nephrology, General Internal Medicine and In-Patient & Emergency Care.

Nephrology

Specialist diagnosis and management of acute and chronic kidney conditions, with tailored treatment plans and ongoing patient support.

Elevated Creatinine or Declining Kidney Function (eGFR)

Referral is appropriate for patients with unexplained or progressive reduction in eGFR, rising creatinine, or suspected chronic kidney disease. Assessment focuses on identifying reversible causes, staging disease, and implementing strategies to slow progression and reduce cardiovascular risk.

Haematuria or Proteinuria Requiring Investigation

Patients with persistent or unexplained haematuria or proteinuria benefit from specialist nephrology assessment. Evaluation includes targeted investigations to determine underlying renal pathology and guide appropriate management or onward referral if required.

Acute Kidney Injury

Dr. McQuillan provides prompt assessment of acute kidney injury to identify precipitating factors, optimise fluid and medication management, and reduce the risk of progression to chronic kidney disease.

Chronic Kidney Disease Management

Referral is appropriate for patients with established chronic kidney disease who require specialist input for disease monitoring, complication management, medication optimisation, and long-term care planning.

Kidney Stone Prevention

Patients with recurrent renal calculi or high-risk stone disease can be referred for metabolic evaluation. Management focuses on identifying contributory factors and implementing evidence-based dietary, medical, and lifestyle interventions to reduce recurrence.

Electrolyte Disorders

Specialist input is available for patients with persistent or complex electrolyte abnormalities, including disorders of sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphate, or magnesium, particularly where standard management has been unsuccessful.

Resistant Hypertension

Referral is appropriate for patients with difficult-to-control or secondary hypertension. Assessment includes evaluation for underlying renal or endocrine causes and optimisation of antihypertensive therapy to reduce long-term cardiovascular risk.

Diabetic Nephropathy

Patients with diabetes and evidence of kidney involvement may be referred for specialist management aimed at slowing disease progression, optimising metabolic control, and reducing renal and cardiovascular complications.

General Internal Medicine

Comprehensive assessment and treatment of cardiovascular and general medical conditions, focused on early diagnosis and long-term health.

Hypertension – Assessment and Optimisation

Comprehensive assessment of hypertension, including secondary causes, medication optimisation, and cardiovascular risk stratification, is provided for patients requiring specialist review.

Heart Failure Management

Dr. McQuillan accepts referrals for patients with acute or chronic heart failure, including those with cardiorenal syndrome, where integrated medical management and optimisation of therapy are required.

Diabetes and Weight Management

Specialist support is available for patients with diabetes and associated metabolic or renal complications, with a focus on improving glycaemic control, weight management, and long-term organ protection.

Multi-morbidity and Complex Medical Patients

Patients with multiple chronic conditions and complex care needs may benefit from coordinated general medical review to rationalise treatment plans, optimise medications, and improve overall clinical outcomes.

Polypharmacy Review and Optimisation

Referral is appropriate for patients with significant medication burden, adverse drug effects, or complex prescribing needs. Review focuses on deprescribing where appropriate and improving medication safety.

Syncope, Collapse, Falls, or Tia Requiring Assessment

Patients with unexplained syncope, recurrent falls, collapse, or suspected transient ischaemic attack may be referred for comprehensive medical assessment, including cardiovascular, neurological, and metabolic evaluation.

General Medical Opinion for Complex Cases

Dr. McQuillan provides general medical consultation for patients with diagnostic uncertainty, overlapping conditions, or complex clinical presentations requiring specialist internal medicine input.

In-Patient & Emergency Care

Thorough evaluation of urinary symptoms, supported by targeted investigations to identify causes and guide effective treatment.

Direct Admission for Acute Medical Patients

Dr. McQuillan is available for direct admission of acute medical patients requiring in-patient care at St Vincent’s Private Hospital, subject to clinical appropriateness and bed availability.

In-patient Consultation for Complex Medical and Nephrology Cases

In-patient consultation services are provided for hospitalised patients with complex nephrology or general medical issues, including acute kidney injury, electrolyte disturbances, and multi-system disease.
